Breisach/RheinBreisach/RheinBreisach/Rhein / City Profiles Breisach is situated in one of Germany’s warmest regions. On the banks of the river Rhine which is here the border to France, and close to Switzerland and the Black Forest. From Breisach cathedral hill one has a marvellous view reaching from the Rhine valley to the Vosges mountains in the west and the Black Forest in the east. The town has a lively history of more than 3000 years during which it changed its territorial affiliation many times. The building of Breisach’s famous cathedral of St. Stephan started at the end of the 12th century and was finished approximately three centuries later. Today, Breisach is the economic and cultural centre of the area, with many tourist and sports facilities. Strolling along the banks of the river Rhine on a sunny day is very popular among visitors and the people living here. The Rhine itself allows all kinds of watersports. The “Unterstadt” (lower town), situated at the foot of the cathedral hill, is the meeting point for shopping and taking a break in one of the many cafés. Exquisite restaurants as well as cosy inns invite visitors to get a taste of the famous Alsatian-Badonian cuisine of the region. Regional wines and sparkling wines can be tasted during a visit to one of Europe’largest wineries or the sparkling-wine cellar to be found in Breisach.
