MiltenbergMiltenbergMiltenberg / City Profiles MILTENBERG AM MAIN – HALF-TIMBERED HOUSES, CULTURE AND ZEST FOR LIFE LOCATED DIRECTLY ON THE MAIN RIVER BETWEEN THE SPESSART AND ODENWALD REGIONS, MILTENBERG FASCINATES WITH IST MEDIEVAL HALF-TIMBERED HOUSES AND WONDERFULLY ROMANTIC ATMOSPHERE. THE TOWN IS SURROUNDED BY VINEYARDS AND HIKING AND CYCLING TRAILS AND IS ONLY 75 KM FROM FRANKFURT. AN EVENTFUL HISTORY: Thanks to its strategic position on the old trade route between Nuremberg and Frankfurt the city experienced a prosperous heyday quite early in its history. This was followed by periods of changing fortunes, but the original medieval structure and architecture of the town have been preserved down to the present day. Many magnificent old half-timbered buildings still bear witness to the earlier importance of Miltenberg. Among the most famous are the houses on the Alter Marktplatz (Old Market Square), which is also known as the Schnatterloch (Chatter Hole), and also the Riesen (Giant), which is the oldest royal inn in Germany. CULTURAL HIGHLIGHT – THE MUSEUM: Miltenberg´s museum, which won the Bavarian Museum Prize in 1999, is definitely worth a visit. In addition to its extensive permanent exhibition covering many aspects of the town’s history the museum is also a venue for regular special exhibitions, lectures and other events. The 450-year-old museum building is also very interesting in its own right. Many additional original details were uncovered during the recent conversion work, and they harmonise beautifully with the new elements. EVENTS: Theatre Festival at Mildenburg Castle (July); Michaelismesse Fair (August); Miltenberg Autumn Wine Festival (September); Romantic Christmas Market (Advent). The regular programme of events is complemented by concerts, lectures and readings, markets, exhibitions, festivals and celebrations, guided hikes and cycle tours, sightseeing tours and much more besides. CULINARY DELIGHTS: You can enjoy a wide range of excellent food, from hearty local fare at the traditional inns and winegrowers’ pubs to international cuisine. There is also a good choice of gourmet restaurants where fresh local products are used to produce true culinary delights, always with a focus on what is in season. SIGHTSEEING TOURS: Available in German for individual travellers on Saturdays and Wednesdays at 10:30h, from May to October.
