Detmold - City of Culture in the Teutoburg Forest

High above Detmold the Herman Monument acts as an reminder of the famous "Battle of the Teutoburg Forest" in the year 9 A.D., that prevented the roman access to northern Europe. Detmold is the city of culture for everyone with a varied programme of cultural events from classic to modern. More than 600 historic buildings adorn the historic old town, which was awarded a a gold medal. Small half-timbered houses alternate with proud plastered buildings. The residence castle, built in the Weser Renaissance style, imparts an unforgettable look into the past. Nearby the Lippe State Museum shows an abmirable collection of Lippe and international cultural assets. More than 100 completely furnished buildings spread over 250 acres illustrate the landscapes of Westphalia in the LWL Open-Air Museum. The daily free flights at the largest eagle observatory in Europe in Detmold-Berlebeck are always a unique experience. A visit to the Bird Park Heiligenkirchen with its numerous indigenous and exotic birds admidst colourful flower beds is fun for the entire family.
